Pieter graduated from the University of Pretoria (UP) with a BA Fine Arts degree in 1991, and an MA Fine Arts (Painting) in 1994. He completed a PhD (HE) in 2016, also from UP. In 1994 he joined Pretoria Boys High School as an art teacher and was head of the Department of Visual Art from 2002 to 2007. In 2007 he was appointed course co-ordinator for Arts Education in the Faculty of Education at UP. In 2014 he joined the Nelson Mandela University as a senior lecturer, Studio Arts. In 2016 he was appointed acting HoD. In 2018 he was promoted to associate professor of Visual Art. In 2019 he became director of the School Visual and Performing Arts in the Faculty of Humanities, Nelson Mandela University.
From 2010 to 2019 Pieter served as chairperson of the Sasol New Signatures National Art Competition. Pieter has held 17 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous local and six international group exhibitions.
