Thanks for looking at my prints. I am a Street Photographer. I am currently living in Eastern Pennsylvania with my wife, three teenage girls, three cats, one rabbit and one pig. However I grew up in the gritty streets of a big New England City and first become interested in street photography when seeing the exhibit “Atget Old France” at the Smithsonian in DC. This has turned into the model for my work.
In 1982, during a vacation to Detroit, I knew I had to record the street scene going on around me. So I got myself a Canon A-1 and began my photographic experience. I still use this same Canon A-1 today. All of my prints began on Chrome film (color slides).
My first photography trip was a three-week cross-country journey with my friend and wife Carol, who accompanied me on most of my early photographic sessions. For the next couple of years we focused on cities in the eastern USA, primarily New York. Staying in 42nd Street hotels and drinking in the Bowery, we walked the streets recording whatever we saw. There was a heavy dark side to places we would venture. Carol would be my eyes and ears while I focused on photography. Many occasions I heard the whisper ”Move! Now!”
The next phase began when my day job afforded me the opportunity to travel extensively on business. With careful planning and not too much sleep, there was always time to get out with my ”A-1”. Over the next 14 years I visited over 25 countries on four continents. What is displayed today is some of what I brought back. A strong colorful history, magnificent relics, fascinating streets and very friendly people made the People’s Republic of China one of my favorite places for photography.
Up to now, I have displayed my work to only a very, very limited group of close friends. Everyone who saw a “Slide Show” would always ask why didn’t I display them publicly. So 23 years later, I am finally doing just that.
What you are seeing is a very small sample from a photography collection that has been years in the making. In taking my pictures I have always lived by one rule: capture the image but don’t offend the subject. Respect for the person, place or thing is essential to capture the true spirit and to preserve it for all time. The “Streets Gods” have always been kind to me and I think this is the reason.
Please enjoy these pictures. Email me with questions or comments, as each picture does have a story that I would love to share. Photography is fleeting moments captured, the essence, the spirit, the soul recorded, preserved, which can take us to another place or back to another time.
